Rattan Pack Baskets
11.01.2025 - 11.02.2025
Step into the living tradition of splint basketry and create your own rattan pack basket — a design modelled after the pounded Ash basket that has carried generations of both indigenous and settler foragers, hunters, travellers of the Northeast.
Over two days, you’ll learn the hands-on skills of weaving reed splints into a strong, functional basket, finishing it with cloth shoulder straps for everyday use. Alongside the practical craft, we’ll discuss where this style and lineage originates from and how it has ended up in settler hands. From food gathering to carrying traps and tools, the tall, deep pack basket became a trusted companion of those living close to the land.
This workshop is as much about connection as craft — you’ll leave with not only a rugged basket for harvesting and adventuring, but also a deeper appreciation of the traditions that shaped this enduring tool of the woods.
Cost: $325 CAD
Location: Salt Spring Island Nov 1 and 2, 2025
Once your registration fee is paid, you’ll receive a welcome packet with detailed course information and preparations.

This course will require a committed amount of focused time to ensure completion of the basket within the two days. We will do our best to keep every one up to speed as they progress.
We of course are always willing to help and support as needed.
Every student will take home their own basket.
All raw course materials and tools are provided for the course.
There is the option to bring your own leather as a substitute for the cotton material provided.
(Although in our experience it is a good idea to use the basket for awhile first. This will give you some time to make any final refinements before cutting your beautiful leather. )
